Robertson County Players

 End Notes

From the Director

For many years, since being back with the RCP, I have often wondered about what it would be like to direct a play.  I have watched many directors and producers and have taken notes on how to create a great show.  Over the years, several people had asked me if I had ever thought about directing.  And while it did cross my mind from time to time, I kept passing.  But one day I seriously started looking at options.  I could have chosen a musical or even a show with just a few characters but I remembered seeing a high school production of  M*A*S*H when I was a kid. It looked like such a fun show. But when I read the book and the stage version, I realized there is more to M*A*S*H than meets the eye.  On the surface, it is a story set in the early 1950s about two new doctors who come to South Korea to serve their duty during the Korean War.  They are insubordinate, mischievous rule breakers but they turn out to be excellent, good hearted surgeons.  Though this story is about people trying to survive an intolerable situation, it is a light-hearted story with a few great hidden messages within.  The familiar hilarity along with the complexity of the storyline is why I chose M*A*S*H to be my directorial debut.

I knew directing would be a challenge but I didn't know just how challenging it would turn out.  There are so many aspects that have to take place for a production to happen.  However, during this process, I realized what a blessing it has been.  I have met so many new people and my wife, Karen, and I have assembled what I think is a great cast with lots of new and familiar faces.  We've had some fun times during this process and I feel that we have built a family of friends that we'll cherish for years to come.  One last note, I would like to dedicate my first show as a Director to my beloved dad, Joe.
