About the Author
John Patrick (birthname John Patrick Goggin) was born in May 1905. Abandoned as a child, he spent his youth as a delinquent in foster care. He secured a job at 19 as an announcer for KPO Radio in San Francisco. He started writing scripts for radio, and went on to write his first play in 1935, which opened the door to writing screenplays in Hollywood. Patrick volunteered for American Field Service offering medical services in WWII before his second play opened. He served in Egypt, India, and Burma, which gave him the inspiration for his next play The Hasty Heart, which was turned into a film starring Ronald Reagan.
Mr. Patrick's work is varied and expansive, always showcasing his clever wit. He won both a Pulitzer prize and a Tony Award for his play The Teahouse of the August Moon. He was found dead in 1995 at the age of 90 in what was ruled a suicide. A tragic end to a brilliant mind.
