Stage Notes

 A Note From The Directors

Stage Notes began in 2009 out of a desire to teach our students that their talents can make a difference in our community. Ten years later, thanks to supporters like YOU, Stage Notes has donated over $50,000 to local organizations and continues to provide students with rich theatrical experiences, as well as life lessons in philanthropy. As we enter our second decade of “Performance With A Purpose”, we vow to continue advocating for and promoting the arts in the North Country.

The 2019 show season is new and exciting because we have created a “summer stock” experience for our students; producing two musicals back to back; PIPPIN  and CHICAGO, HIGH SCHOOL EDITION. Both shows were originally choreographed by the great Bob Fosse. Stage Notes has spent 2019 being educated about Bob Fosse and his signature dance style. We are proud to have David Simmons with us again this year to choreograph both musicals. We commend and thank David for his top notch work with our students.

Thoughts on PIPPIN:

With an infectiously unforgettable score from musical theatre giant, Stephen Schwartz, and a story written by the late Roger O. Hirson, with uncredited additions and changes by director and choreographer Bob Fosse, Pippin tells the story of a young man trying to find his purpose in life, and to live his life "extraordinarily". The story in Pippin's head is framed by a company of actors who lead him from situation to situation in pursuit of that one thing that is “completely fulfilling”. All of this is led by the Leading Player – a charismatic, manipulative voice in his ear. She leads him to war and “glory”, pleasures of the flesh, politics and power, and ultimately “trapping” him in ordinary life. Finally, Pippin finds himself on the precipice of a monumental act and is left to choose between the extraordinary or the safety of the ordinary.

The original 1972 production of PIPPIN went on to win 4 Tony Awards, including best director and best choreography wins for Fosse. A wildly successful revival was mounted in 2013, directed by Diane Paulus and choreographed by Fosse protégé Chet Walker, and also went on to win 4 Tony Awards.

PIPPIN is a tale, though sometimes dark, that tells us that even though we often think we want "magic shows and miracles", true happiness and fulfilment is often found in the most common pursuits - love and family.

Enjoy the show and thank you for supporting the arts,
Kyle and Ticia Aumell
