Miami, FL--Founded in 1994, Urban Renewal Greater Enhancement National aka URGENT, Inc. will celebrate its 20th year anniversary in 2014! A 501 (c) (3) youth and community development organization, URGENT is dedicated to empowering young minds to transform their communities. URGENT believes elders are the anchors of communities, parents are the coaches but it is the young people that are the drivers of change!
URGENT's current programs include:
Youth Empowerment After School Program provides elementary school boys and girls an alternative to their hectic day by providing a safe place after school where they find peace and love in a supportive nurturing environment that helps them discover their hidden talents, build skills and identify their multiple intelligences. Program outcomes include increased reading literacy, social skills and fitness stamina.
Rites of Passage Youth Development Program is a comprehensive life skills and development program for at-risk teen girls designed to support their ability to make positive life choices as they transition through adolescence towards adulthood. Girls engage in deep discussions about relationships, dating, body image, life skills, avoiding risky behavior and prepare for higher education, job & career. Program outcomes include increased goal setting, coping and decision making, work and higher education preparedness and positive peer interactions.
Campaign for Girls Well-Being helps girls find their voice to speak out against the threats to their well-being, lead community awareness activities, use the arts, culture and media to spur positive change and engage in communities in order to promote solutions which support the well-being of all girls. Program outcomes include increased civic engagement, leadership skills and empowerment.
Intergenerational Project provides support to grandparents raising grandchildren and offers an opportunity for grandparents raising grandchildren to come together and share successes, hardships and wisdom while learning from each other and industry professionals about topics such as health, legal rights, education, parenting and more. Program outcomes include increased parenting skills and ability to provide continued care of children in the home preventing the use of the foster care system.
Youth Empowerment Summer Camp offers a unique gender specific safe space where girls are able to dream, explore, reflect and find their own voice to express the person they are becoming. These themes are explored through the arts, drama, dance, arts & crafts, yoga, cultural music, fitness, literacy and etiquette. Program outcomes include increased reading literacy, social skills and fitness endurance.
Murals for Dorsey Park is a community arts, youth literacy promotion and community engagement initiative designed to engage young artists, mentoring artists and community members in the revitalization of Miami’s Historic Overtown, at Dorsey Park with murals created collaboratively to commemorate it as the historic home of Negro League Baseball in S. Florida.
