THE SOUND OF MUSIC, presented by Leland Hayward, Richard Halliday, and Messrs, Rodgers & Hammerstein, opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York City on November 16, 1959 and ran for a total of 1,443 performances. The Director was Vincent J. Donehue and the musical numbers were staged by Joe Layton, with scenic production by Oliver Smith, costumes by Lucinda Ballard, and lighting by Jean Rosenthal.
