  Director's Note

Into the Woods when stripped down to its bare bones, is truly nothing more than a story about human nature, and the consequences that follow our undeniable want for something more. When first introduced to “Into the Woods”, I couldn’t believe just how beautifully the score was laced into a series of Grimm fairytales, and the deeper meaning that lay beneath it all. Sondheim and Lapine took these characters that we all know and love in such a “happy ever after” way, and adhered realistic problems to their stories; to only prove that even in the happiest of times, troubles are still found. I chose “Into the Woods” for our first annual conservatory production because I knew these young actors and actresses weren’t only ready for the musical challenge that is any Sondheim musical, but because I trusted them as young story tellers with a delicate piece of theatre that just has to be done right. Folks, they’re doing it more than right.

I couldn’t be more proud of my cast, my team, and my family for it all. Connie thank you for every opportunity you’ve ever given to me, and for believing in me every step of the way. To my wonderful parents, always remember that no matter the distance, “no one is alone”. And, last but certainly not least, Graham. You are my shining light in a crazy world full of theatre, and I have no idea how any of this would happen without your patience, love, and constant support.

To my dear friend, Tessa— this one’s for you. I know you’re watching.

Enjoy!
