  Notes from the Director

Phantom Limb

Realizing a story from paper to stage has been a wonderful undertaking. The pressure was on with a story covering such serious subject matter and it was a treat to be trusted with it. Through directing this one act, I have gained a better understanding of the creative process, and I have been able to work with actors more talented than I am. As an audience member, the only favor I ask of you is to pay close attention to every line! Don't miss a thing. And if you are still reading this, put it down and watch the show.

Paved with Good Intentions

When I first read Paved with Good Intentions, I was charmed by the dark humor, sarcasm, and irony riddled within the script. Vincent and Odo were such unlikely companions, but their stories drew me in. So I was overjoyed when I heard I would be directing Paved. I had never worked with material like this: two characters onstage by themselves for 40 minutes, no sets, barely any props, and an the impossible mission of figuring out where they are and why they are there. Being born and raised Catholic, working with this material was very intriguing to me. It’s often a fine line between humor or entertainment and appropriation, but this play involves the Catholic faith without making it the center piece of the plot. It is a vessel for highlighting the differences between two people stuck in the same place. Mitchell has swiftly crafted a show that asks the audience to fill in blanks, make assumptions, and then question those same assumptions.

That, I believe, is the beauty of art. Thank you for spending your evening with us, and enjoy!
