The Drowsy Chaperone - March 23 - March 25, 2021

Miami Country Day School

 Director's Notes

If you’ve ever sat in a dark theater and thought, “Please, please theater gods, let it be good,” then this is the show for you. The Drowsy Chaperone shamelessly addresses a great unspoken yearning in all of our hearts: to be entertained! With how absolutely crazy this year has been, the need to just laugh and be entertained is more important now maybe than ever. After months of rehearsals and just two weeks before the show opened, COVID forced us to cancel our spring musical, Chicago, last year. It was a real heartbreaker BUT WE ARE BACK!

The kids have worked so hard for months. Due to COVID safety measures, this show is the “Frankenstein of shows” since the 16 kids’ vocals were pre-recorded at home, mixed, and then pieced together. We later recorded each student one by one on a green screen over 6 days (75 hours plus) so they can record safely and then we digitally put them together on a screen so it would appear they are all together during the acting scenes. We would later piece together our “Frankenstein” with all individual recordings and the cast dances. So when you watch this show, we hope you can appreciate all the hard work our students put in to make this happen. Also, we knew The Drowsy Chaperone would be just the right show for us to share our comeback with our community. The music will have you humming and the dancing will have you tapping your toes.

The Drowsy Chaperone itself started as a short spoof of 1920s musical styles, created for the bachelor party of Robert Martin and Janet Van De Graaff. Yes, they are real people! Nine years (and many versions later), it arrived on Broadway and garnered thirteen Tony nominations!  The show won five, for Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

We want to share a laugh with you and hope you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to life. Whether you are watching it at the drive-in or in the comfort of your own home, celebrate with us. This show and our students embody the true spirit of a Spartan! When you are watching them perform, may your heart glow with Spartan Pride!

To my Seniors, we miss you already! Thank you for being my first family at MCDS. This will always be your home.

With Love and Respect,

Pla
