SETTING
In this Musical version of The Princess and the Pea, Princess Winnifred is an ungainly, brash girl competing for the hand of Prince Dauntless. His domineering mother Queen Aggravain has declared he must marry a "true" princess before anyone else in the kingdom can marry.
Once Upon a Mattress opened Off-Broadway in May of 1959 and moved to Broadway later that year. The show ran for 244 performances and was nominated for Best Musical at the 1960 Tony Awards.
